Covering a radius of thirty (30) miles and rising around 1341 feet above the small city of Victoria, Signal Hill provides climbers with one of the best views and climbing experiences Seychelles can offer. The name Mapavyon or Signal Hill is testament to the role this location played in the maritime history of this island paradise. Reminiscent of the days of the steam ships, a complex system of flags was adopted to provide important communication to the Victoria Port Authorities in ensuring the safe passage and birthing of ships at the Port facilities. The role of the hill in the shipping history of Seychelles can be traced as far back as 1872. Today this lush mountain area fascinates both locals and tourist alike not only for its history but the awesome views, and natural habitat it provides to those who dare to trek up its peaks. The rewards of taking the climb from the bottom of Victoria are inclusively cultural, physical and psychological. Ideal for a whole day experience starting early in the morning to provide the perfect adrenalin rush.
